Mid Century Modern Vintage Painted Upcycled Art Deco Chest Of Drawers

This 1950s chest of drawers reminded us of the steamer luggage you'd see in the 1920s and 1930s.  The trim detail and shape and size of the piece has more than a look of the luxury steamer trunks of that era.  They would appear to be a standard trunk, but would then open up and convert into wardrobes, perfect for storing all your clothes for a cruise or other long journey. 
 
This piece is stamped 1957 and is a sturdy and finely crafted piece of furniture, with dovetail joints to the wooden drawers.  The edges of the drawers are gently curved, reminiscent of the Art Moderne, streamlined style. It's such a great size too - with 5 drawers offering plenty of storage; the bottom 3 drawers are nice and deep.  We chose  a beautiful custom blend of 2 Fusion Mineral Paint colours to create this fabulous rich green colour; Renfrew Blue and Coal Black.  We picked out the trim detail in Fusion Mineral Paint's Brushed Steel, to give the effect of the galvanized metal, protective bands used on steamer trunks - and the leather, drawer pulls we have added complement the look.  These are English leather in a chestnut colour with nickel studs.  The sides and insides of the drawers have been finished with Fusion's Hemp Oil to bring out their natural colour and enrich the wood.  This is a stunning and unique piece that would fit well into the ever popular, dark decor, interior style, as well as give a dramatic flourish to a more neutral space.
 
We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, pieces that have been neglected.  We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to!  These are character pieces and their imperfections are an integral part of their story.  As a vintage piece from the 1950s it does show signs of use and age, but these do not detract from its style and practicality.  The inside of the top drawer had been bleached and rather than dye it, we added a stripe detail in the same green colour as the outside.
