Art Deco Chest of Drawers, 1930s, Painted soft green and silver
  • Art Deco Chest of Drawers, 1930s, Painted soft green and silver

This striking chest of drawers has truly fabulous Deco detailing with its gorgeous original handles and beautiful mouldings.

It's fair to say that this chest of drawers was looking a little worse for wear when we spotted it. It was covered in thick dark brown varnish that was doing nothing to highlight the decorative mouldings, which are a really lovely feature. The handles, which are very Deco in their design, were extremely dirty and discoloured, but we could see that they had the potential to look fabulous again.

We took the decision to remove all the old varnish and then refinish using a custom colour we created using Fusion Mineral Paints. This beautiful soft pastel green works so well with the stunning original handles. We chose to highlight the decorative mouldings using Posh Chalk pigments in silver. To give added depth and dimension we added a glaze over the top, which has really made this detail stand out and gives it added character and style. We have added layers of a matt varnish over the whole piece to give added protection. The handles were very carefully cleaned and they have come up beautifully. We thoroughly cleaned the drawers inside and out and waxed the sides to ensure that they all run well.

As well as being beautiful, this chest of drawers offers excellent storage with 5 good sized drawers, each slightly deeper than the one above it. The lovely soft pastel green would fit well into so many different colour schemes. This is an elegant and classy piece of furniture that would fit perfectly into a vintage home, but would work equally well in a more contemporary setting. It truly is a striking piece of 1930s history and definitely a one-of-a-kind!

We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, vintage, furniture. We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to! These are character items and their imperfections are an integral part of their story.

As a vintage piece from the 1930s it does show signs of use and age, but these do not detract from its style and practicality. There are some dinks and areas of wear to the wood, as you would expect from a chest of drawers that is over 90 years old, but there is plenty of life left in this gorgeous piece. There is some gapping to the top of the drawers, but they all work well. Please note that the bottom drawer does go slightly in on the left hand side and slightly juts out on the right - please see the photos for details, but it slides in and out well. The handles have cleaned up beautifully, but are showing signs of wear with some marks and scuffing to the cream tops and wear and dinks to some of the metal. This chest of drawers is made from quite a textured wood and you can see the texture and grain of the wood beneath the paint. If you are looking for an off the shelf, mass produced, item with a perfect factory finish, this isn't the piece for you, but if you want a special and unique one-off, that you definitely won't find anywhere else - you've found your perfect match!
