Art Deco 1930s Oak Lawrencia Furniture chest of drawers
  • Art Deco 1930s Oak Lawrencia Furniture chest of drawers

This Lawrencia Furniture 1930s Oak chest of drawers was a real find. We love its original curved handles and decorative curved feet and its tiered trim detail is very Deco in style. It was covered in a thick dark varnish, but we knew that there was something rather beautiful underneath.

We stripped off all the old varnish to uncover this lovely mellow quarter sawn/tiger oak. Oak wood has variations in tone and grain and stripping off the existing finish has revealed all its natural beauty. We chose to simply refinish this using a clear Matt varnish to highlight the natural wood details.

The original handles have been stripped and have also come up beautifully. The insides of the drawers have been thoroughly cleaned and the sides waxed to ensure they all run smoothly. There are pads underneath the feet which mean you can slide the chest of drawers to move it. Although these could be removed, if they were not required.

This is a truly lovely piece of 1930s furniture with both Arts and Crafts and Art Deco features and offers good storage with 4 drawers. Lawrencia was the trade name of the William Lawrence & Co. Ltd. a furniture factory based in Nottingham, Notts and founded in 1875. When the factory was completed in 1899 it was the 2nd largest furniture manufacturer in Europe and became known for its high quality pieces in the 1920’s and 30’s.

We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, vintage, furniture. We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to! These are character items and their imperfections are an integral part of their story. As a vintage piece from the 1930s it does show signs of use and age, but these do not detract from its style and practicality. It's always a balance when refinishing pieces; we want to make them look attractive again without compromising the integrity of the piece and its inherited patina and character. Some of the oak on the top and a small area on the side had some damage so we filled these and tinted them with acrylics to blend in with the wood grain. As we mentioned in our description, this is quarter sawn oak and the are natural variations in tone and grain, so it is not one uniform colour. There are some dinks and areas of wear to the wood, as you would expect from a chest of drawers that is over 90 years old, but there is plenty of life left in this gorgeous piece. If you are looking for an off the shelf, mass produced, item with a perfect factory finish, this isn't the piece for you, but if you want a special and unique one-off, that you definitely won't find anywhere else - you've found your perfect match! If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
