Art Deco 1930s Oak chest of drawers
  • Art Deco 1930s Oak chest of drawers

We love this 1930s chest of drawers with its unusual concave moulding as part of its plinth base; a striking Deco feature. It was covered in layers of very dark and thick shellac, but we suspected there was something fabulous underneath – and there was!  Hidden underneath all that dark finish we found the mellow tones of quarter sawn oak, with all its wonderful graining and natural variations.

The handles cleaned up beautifully too. We've never seen handles like this and they certainly add to the uniqueness and beauty of this chest of drawers. They are a faux leather; either imitation crocodile or alligator, we think, and with all the varnish removed and, after careful cleaning, they look absolutely stunning! The chrome plated ends had lost much of their colour, so we polished off the existing finish to reveal a gorgeous mellow brass underneath – which works so much better with the cleaned up faux leather.

We wanted to keep the gorgeous oak as natural as possible, so have protected it with a clear varnish.  The insides of the drawers have been cleaned and nourished with orange oil.  The sides of the drawers have been waxed to ensure they run smoothly.

This is a stunning piece of 1930s furniture with all its natural beauty revealed.  We loved working on it!

We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, vintage, furniture. We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to! These are character items and their imperfections are an integral part of their story.

As a vintage piece from the 1930s it does show signs of use and age, but this do not detract from its style and practicality. There are some dinks and areas of wear to the wood, as you would expect from a chest of drawers that is over 90 years old, but there is plenty of life left in this gorgeous piece.

This is quarter sawn oak and there are natural variations in both the grain and tones of the wood. There are areas of grain that are darkened, mainly on the top and sides.  The variations of tone are a unique feature of the wood used and ensure that is a truly unique piece of furniture.   There is some gapping to the drawers, but they all work well.  The handles have wear and tear to the faux leather and the ends have had the chrome plating removed to reveal the pale brass underneath - which does have some wear.

If you are looking for an off the shelf, mass-produced, item with a perfect factory finish, this isn't the chest of drawers isn't for you, but if you want a special and unique one-off, that you definitely won't find anywhere else - you've found your perfect match!  If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
