Art Deco 1930s Cocktail Cabinet, Teal with black metal leaf
This vintage cabinet has wonderful Art Deco features. The long, wooden bar handles and the classic Deco shape and design, including the decorative feet, make it a fine example of Art Deco furniture from the 1930s.
This cabinet, is not only striking, it's extremely practical. With cupboard space on the top and 3 deep drawers underneath, it would work well as a drinks cabinet, but also look fabulous in a bedroom, living room or entrance hall. The cupboard has a removable shelf and can accommodate full sized bottles. The drawers are 18.5 cms deep and we were able to fit our wine glasses into them with no problem - though, of course, it does depend on the size of your glasses! The cupboard and drawer dimensions are in the additional dimensions section.
The veneer was damaged, so we took the decision to paint the cabinet. We repaired the veneer where we could, but removed it completely from the areas it was beyond repair. We knew this would look amazing in a dark teal and created a custom blend using 2 Fusion Mineral Paint colours - Midnight Blue and Park Bench. This beautiful, deep green/blue, looks incredibly classy and elegant. We have added a Matt finish varnish to give added protection. Black metal leaf on the the feet and the central trim adds real style and drama and looks so striking with the teal and chrome. The black leaf has been protected with Whitson's Universal Lacquer, which is designed specifically for use on metal leaf. The inside of the cupboard is painted the same custom blend as the outside and have used the same Matt finish varnish. We've added a battery operated, sensor light, inside the cabinet, which has 3 settings, on, off and light/motion sensor. The light has a magnet which attaches to the fitting inside the cabinet. The battery is charged by USB using the cable included. The inside and sides of the drawers have been thoroughly cleaned and left natural. The insides were nourished using Orange Oil and we waxed the outsides.
This cabinet is a lovely piece of Art Deco history and so is perfect for this kind of interior, but would also work in a more traditional space. The trend for dark, moody and dramatic interiors is more popular then ever and this would fit perfectly into this kind of contemporary scheme, as well as adding a stylish flourish to a more neutral decor.
We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, vintage, furniture. We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to! These are character items and their imperfections are an integral part of their story. As a vintage piece from the 1930s it does show signs of use and age, but these do not detract from its style and practicality.
There are some dinks and areas of wear to the wood, as you would expect from a cabinet that is nearly 90 years old, but there is plenty of life left in this gorgeous piece. There is some gapping to the top of the drawers/cabinet doors, but they all work well. The sides and insides of the drawers have been kept as natural wood. They have been thoroughly cleaned, but do show some signs of use, scratches, and minor staining. Please note that you can see the texture and grain of the wood beneath the paint. There is some wear to the chrome-plated handle edges.
If you are looking for an off the shelf, mass produced, item with a perfect factory finish, this isn't the cabinet for you, but if you want a special and unique one-off, that you definitely won't find anywhere else - you've found your perfect match!
