Art Deco 1930s Beautility Oak Sideboard Drinks Cocktail Cabinet Vintage Gin Bar
  • Art Deco 1930s Beautility Oak Sideboard Drinks Cocktail Cabinet Vintage Gin Bar

This fabulous Art Deco, 1930s oak sideboard is by Beautility Funiture, London.  We believe this to date from 1938 and was probably designed by Ronald Sadow (the eldest son of the owner and founder of Beautility) and is quite a rare and desirable piece.

The gorgeous Art Deco handles are such a striking feature, but this cabinet is not just beautiful to look at, it's designed to be incredibly practical too.  This is an example of one of Beautility's mechanical sideboards - the left hand lid lifts up and out to reveal both a drawer and a cutlery tray.  The Beautility label inside states that this mechanical drawer is a patent applied for design feature and the patent for this was granted in 1939, hence the dating of the sideboard to 1938.

Both sides of the cabinet open up to reveal cupboards with removable shelves, and on one side, a metal bottle holder.  The main doors open to reveal a fixed full length shelf, and the bottom is split into 2, along with an internal drawer with beautiful deco style handles.  Please note that due to the internal drawer, the height in the main cupboard is restricted.  Therefore, if you wish to store any bottles there, they would need to lay on their side, possibly using a wire rack.  Whereas, the drawers on the 2 opening sides of the sideboard are removable, so you are able to store bottles upright in both of these.  Please do check out the internal dimensions.

Beautility are well known for their mid century, walnut finish, cabinets, but we absolutely love this oak finish, which was used on some of their earlier cabinets.  There are a number of different tones and grains to the oak veneers used, the doors of the sides resemble tiger oak, whereas the oak on the front of the cabinet is a beautiful, rich, golden oak with varying mellow tones to the colour.  The trim around the doors and base board along the bottom are a paler oak veneer.

As you would expect from an item of furniture dating back to the 1930s there is age-related wear and tear with some dinks.    This is an inherent part of its story and character. There are small areas where the veneer was missing and filled in and the repairs have colour tints applied to blend them in.  The sideboard has been thoroughly cleaned, sanded and finished with a satin varnish to protect it and enhance its beautiful golden glow.

This rare sideboard is a beautiful item of furniture that would fit perfectly into a vintage home, but would work equally well in a more contemporary setting.  It truly is a solid, stunning piece of 1930s history!

Internal dimensions of main cupboard area: width of top shelf 83.5 cms, height 27 cms, depth 35.5 cms.  Bottom shelf dimensions: width of  left side 41.5 cms, width of right side 41 cms , height 29.5 cms, depth 41cms.  Depth of the side cupboards is 15cms.
